Dan Haubert, R.I.P.
Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 3:09PM It was through Facebook that I found out Dan Haubert had died.
The two of us were casual acquaintances in high school - the specifics of our friendship mostly lived and died in our Honors Visual Basic class, where Dan would regularly give me code to help me through projects so I could be the 8th person in on a linked game of Starcraft.
And throughout the course of college, I never thought much about Dan, until we bumped into each other two years ago over Christmas break at the Bier Stube in Toledo. At the time, we had discovered that we were both living in Washington D.C. We talked about hanging out - he invited me to a house party in Adams Morgan, and I'd invite him to my DJ nights. Busy schedules eventually won out, and we never saw each other while we shared the same city.
Dan moved to Boston to go work on his startup, and I moved to Brooklyn. Although we exchanged mixes on FavTape intermittently, we really started to talk to each other when I lost my job.
In an effort to build up my resume, he told me to put Ticketstumbler on it with whatever position and responsibilities I'd be best at holding (I didn't take him up on this offer), and to use him as a reference. It was a gesture that humbled me then, and humbles me even more now.
The last time I talked to Dan was when I got the new job at Cake Group. I'd literally just hung up on the phone with my Tom, and he was one of the first people I sent an excited GChat to.
Dan was a lot of things, but the best thing that I can say about Dan Haubert is that he was truly ahead of the curve. Although he was only two years older than me, I can safely say that if I'm as together as Dan was two years out, I'll be a force to be reckoned with, and the river of comments that has followed on TicketStumbler following the terrible news is proof that you were an incredibly capable , kind-hearted human being who touched everybody around him.
Your insight and snark will be missed, friend.
